Experience a Mount Kenya trekking and discover the iconic beauty of Africa’s second highest mountain. With its snow and ice capped summit, it’s a real mind blowing that it straddle the equator! Rearing 5199 meters above the Kenyan plains of the Great Rift Valley. Nevertheless, the rewards in terms of scenery and solitude are more than ample on Chogoria Naromoru route, from rapidly changing flora and fauna in different zones to brooding lava towers and glaciers reflected in still, rock-bound tarns. Healthy, fit trekkers can safely access the lesser of the trio-peaks, Lenana Point, at 4985 meters. Sleep under sweeping star-filled skies and grab a magnificent feeling – which you take home with you forever.

DAY 1 - Arrival in Nairobi

Arrive in Nairobi, gateway to your thrilling Mount Kenya climbing; transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to acclimate to your new time zone and prepare for the African adventure that awaits you. Depending on what time you arrive, Feast on a range of familiar and exotic meats roasted over an open flame barbecue pit, Carnivore Restaurant. Ever wanted to try ostrich or crocodile? Here's your chance to do so (at a world-renowned restaurant).

DAY 2 - Nairobi to Mount Kenya Bandas

Depart Nairobi and drive north passing diverse agricultural lands and landscapes to Chogoria town where you will enjoy a hearty lunch, at the fascinating slopes of Mount Kenya. After meeting your crew you’ll have a full briefing and equipment check. Afterwards, set out from this point for Chogoria gate. After a few formalities at the Gate, hike up through magnificent tropical forest and thick stands of bamboo to Chogoria Bandas, wooden huts with bunk beds; clean linen, hot showers and cooking facilities. It will be an easy trek in the afternoon to help you acclimatize.

DAY 3 - Mt Kenya Bandas to Lake Ellis Campsite

Awakening to the lyrical early-morning birdsongs, you begin your day with a good solid breakfast. The wet forest landscape opens abruptly above the bamboo zone, presenting a vista of parkland laced with magnificent stands of East African Rosewood, as you climb through lush forest to arrive for lunch at the crystal waters of Lake Ellis, popular with trout fishermen. A 250-meter acclimatization hike up Mugi Hill offers beautiful views of the glacier fed tarn. It is best to enjoy a slow pace and allow your body to adjust. By sunset, plan to get in the camp, nested at the banks of Lake Ellis.

DAY 4 -Lake Ellis to Minto`s Camp

Set off in the early morning up a steep moorland trail, bordered with Open tussock grassland that continues from the end of the giant heather right up to the snowline , descending to Lake Michaelson, incredibly picturesque in the crisp, clear air, which is complemented with views of the Vivienne Falls and Gorges Valley. Soaring above the camp site, impressive columns and caves of The Temple make a breathtaking background in an outlandish world. The equatorial afro-alpine zone here is renowned for its unusual mega physic flora which results from a unique climate.

DAY 5 -Summit Day! Enjoy one of the best sunrises in Africa

The big day, Pre-dawn attempt of the summit starts at 0300hrs. The early start is designed to get you to the peak just in time for sunrise, as it reflect its golden glow on the Majestic peaks of Batian and Nelion over the equator. It also increases your chances of summiting without cloud cover with epic view of the stars as almost anywhere on Earth. The climb continues on frozen scree and continues on a rocky track with some very minor scrambling. Finally, we arrive at Lenana Peak-(4985m). You did it! And to add to the exhilaration, Mt. Kilimanjaro is also visible from the horizon. Then descend down on the Westside of the mountain through the Austrian hut, proceed down to Mackinder hut for a well-deserved triumph breakfast. Afterwards, proceed on the Naromoru track, traversing the alpine zone, steep marshy section known as the Vertical Bog, giant heather zone and hagenia hypericum zone to reach met station for overnight.

DAY 6 - Trek to Chogoria Gate. Transfer to Nairobi for a shower and celebratory

This will be an easy descent for two and a half hours, walk down through the tropical rain forest, bamboo jungle, rosewood to reach Naromoru park entrance for signing out. Afterwards, pick up our certificates of ascent. We transfer to our hotel Nairobi - and delight after camping on the mountains slopes. Here we get a well-earned shower and celebration.

DAY 7 -Departure day. Single timed transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport

Depending on flight times we have some relaxation time today. We need to vacate our rooms at 1100, but can use the hotel facilities until our transfer to the airport. A single timed transfer is provided. If you’ve opted to go on a safari – well, that’s a new adventure and we’ll be pleased to arrange it for you!
